The flames swarmed around her. Her toes were sizzling in pain. She couldn’t cry. She couldn’t scream. She knew so little about death. Her mom had tried to explain it to her once. She’d talked about heaven. Ripley didn’t understand heaven though. She only understood the pain in this moment.

“Babe?” Ripley heard a voice, but she didn’t recognize it. “Babe.” The voice came again. It wasn’t her mom or her dad. It didn’t sound like her grandma, Ethan or Benji. “Ripley.” The voice said her name. Ripley watched the flames crawl over her legs and meet her knees. “Ripley?”

Ripley woke with a start. She was on the floor of Kenna’s bedroom. The blankets were half around her legs. She must have fallen out of the bed. She felt a hand on her back and realized she was sweating through her shirt.

“Kenna?”

“Hey, you rolled out of bed. Let’s get you back to sleep,” Kenna said.

“I saw it again,” Ripley told her as Kenna picked her up off the floor. “My parents burning. I saw Ethan too.”

“I’m sorry.” Kenna held her. She pulled Ripley to her. She, apparently, didn’t care that Ripley was clammy, gross and exhausted from not having a solid night of sleep in the past few weeks. “It’s okay. I’m here. Let’s go back to sleep, okay?”

“Okay.”

Ripley slid under the blankets Kenna fixed for her. Kenna climbed in next to her. She wrapped a warm arm around Ripley’s waist and pulled her back to her. Ripley reveled in the feeling of Kenna’s strength. She needed it now, it appeared, more than ever. As Kenna whispered sweet words in her ear, Ripley knew. She knew she’d finally fallen in love for the first time.
